The name bulldog originated around 1567 and was used for numerous ancestors of modern bulldog breeds. English bulldogs were originally breed for bull baiting. Bull baiting was used as a form of entertainment in which a bulldog would try to suffocate a bull by latching onto the bull ring in it’s nose. Bull baiting was banned in 1835 and this feature of the bulldog was slowly breed out of it.

When bull baiting was banned bulldogs were then breed to become show dogs. The first dog show to have a class for bulldogs was Birmingham. Bulldogs today are still breed for show but most importantly to be very loyal family friendly pets.

The English bulldog has a short stout and very sturdy compact body. English bulldogs are best know for their short stocky bodies and wrinkly almost saggy skin on their face. English bulldogs come in several different color coats. A sign of a well bread bulldog is a short shiny smooth coat and stocky body.

A full grown English bulldog weighs about 55 – 70 pounds and measures from 12 inches to 15 inches. The appearance of the English bulldog is very unique thus making them a very popular pet.

Many people are under the impression that the English bulldog is a vicious dog and not family friendly but just the opposite is true. English bulldogs are very family friendly and generally get along with other dogs as well. They have no problem playing with children or being in a crowded environment.

The English bulldog is a great inside dog as it prefers and needs to be in cooler climates. Exposure to extended amount of time in the heat can be hazards for it’s health.

Bulldogs are not quite or good smelling pets. They tend to snore and breath very heavily making this something that you will need to get use to. English bulldogs also tend to pass gas very often and can have excessive drooling.

Bulldogs need to have daily physical exercise in order to maintain a healthy body. If not regularly exercised English bulldogs will begin to gain weight which could lead to other health problems. A well maintained English bulldog should go on to live a fulfilling life for an average of 10 years.

English bulldogs are prone to several health problems that you should be aware of. Hip dysplasia is the result of abnormal development of the hip joint while it is a puppy. Signs of hip displasia are limping, stiffing of the legs, bunny hopping when walking and a loss of muscle tone. Surgery is an option but it can be rather expensive.

English bulldogs often have breathing problems due to an elongated soft palate. This palate can be shorten by laser surgery and is not a major issue if addressed. Signs of an elongated soft palate are heavy raspy breathing, vomiting and the inability to calm down quickly after activity.

Cherry eye or third eyelid eversion is another common problem among bulldogs. This occurs when the tear production of an eye fails causing it to dry out. The result is a red puffy looking mass protruding out of the eye. This can easily be treated with a topical ointment.

English bulldogs will need to have the folds in their faces cleaned at least once a week to avoid infections caused by dirt and moisture. It is recommend to brush their teeth daily with a regular bristle human tooth brush using veterinary approved toothpaste.

As with any dog the English bulldog will need love, attention and general maintenance. The English bulldog is an exceptional family pet and will lead to a life long companion.

The American Pit Bull Terrier was brought to America in the 1800’s from Ireland and England. The American Pit Bull Terrier was a popular dog for fighting and as a working dog on farms.

In the early 1900’s dog fighting in American was banned and two clubs were formed to register and keep track of all American Pit Bull Terrier’s. The United Kennel Club and the American Dog Breeder’s Association were created to help legitimize the breed.

The American Pit Bull Terrier remained a popular breed of choice until the time period of World War II where other dog breeds emerged.

Today the American Pit Bull Terrier remains to be a highly controversial topic for many dog enthusiasts. It’s aggressive attitude and natural fighting tendency still in it’s blood line has many wondering how family friendly this breed really is.

American Pit Bull Terrier male weighs from 35 to 65 pounds and stands 15 to 22 inches from the ground. It’s female counterpart weighs in between 30 and 60 pounds and also stands 15 to 22 inches from the ground.

The coat of the American Pit Bull Terrier is short and stiff but has an almost shiny appearance to it. It’s coat comes in many different colors and shades as well as the eye color. The American Pit Bull Terrier has a medium sized muscular jaw that meets a wedged shaped head.

It’s body is very muscular and sturdy with little to no fat. The American Pit Bull Terrier boast a broad chest giving it an intimidating and powerful stance.

The Temperament of the American Pit Bull Terrier is based on how the dog was raised. One that has been brought up in a family environment shows an outgoing, playful yet protective attitude for it’s family. The APBT will make a great pet as long as it trained well and raised with a firm but fair hand.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is well know to show aggression towards other dogs that are moving in on it’s territory. It is not a recommended pet for a first time dog owner unless you are ready to handle the aggression that could arise. The breeds high energy level and natural tendency to “prey” leave the American Pit Bull Terrier needing lots of exercise to focus this energy positively.

Mange and heart murmurs and the main health issues that face the American Pit Bull Terrier. Mange is a parasitic infestation
of the skin where a naturally occurring mite will create small patches of missing hair on the dog (see pic). Mange will usually go away with time as long as the dog has a strong immune system. Heart murmurs are most often caused by defective heart valves and if not to serious should not be a major issue.

Overall the American Pit Bull Terrier is good dog when treated with respect and trained with a firm hand. First time pet owners this probably is not the dog of choice for you due to it’s energy and naturally aggressive nature.

The American Pit Bull Terrier has a life expectancy of 12 years.

The American Bulldog is a predecessor of the English Bulldog which originated in England. As will all bulldogs the American
Bulldog has a blood line dating back to England’s bull baiting.

The English Bulldog was eventually breed down to a smaller dog with a softer attitude. The American Bulldog however has
managed to remain bigger and more fierce in nature.

The sole reason that the American Bulldog is still in existence today belongs to John D. Johnson of Summerville, Georgia. He single handily revived this dying breed shortly after WWII. John D. Johnson scoured the south purchasing only best examples of the American Bulldog with the intention of increasing the American Bulldog population through breeding.

American Bulldog is a powerful stocky looking dog, longer legged than an English Bulldog. It weighs between 35 – 70 pounds
and spreads a distance of 20 – 28 inches at the withers. American bulldog has a squared shaped jaw that is extremely powerful
with sharp teeth.

The American Bulldog’s ear are naturally “floppy” but many have cropped ears. The coat of the American Bulldog is coarse and
fairly short short. The coat comes in various colors of brindle, red, white, tan and blue.

Contrary to popular belief the American Bulldog is generally a mild tempered family friendly breed. To ensure that the good
nature of the American Bulldog is exposed it is recommended that they are trained when they are young. They need to be
exposed to other dogs and people to keep them from becoming to protective. They tend to have a strong bond with their master
because of it’s guarding instincts.

The American Bulldog was breed for catching livestock and for protecting property. If you need an animal to guard your house
and one that is still family friendly this is a good choice.

As with other bull breeds hip dysplasia is a common health risk. Hip dysplasia is the result of abnormal
development of the hip joint while it was a puppy. Signs of hip dysplasia are limping, stiffing of the legs, bunny hopping
when walking and a loss of muscle tone.

You can expect the American bulldog to live longer than it’s English Counterpart, up to 17 years. A well maintained and properly trained American Bulldog can make an excellent family companion and great guard dog.

The West Highland Terriers are also known as Westies. These dogs are very active dogs, and are known for their sparkling personalities and their shiny white coats. They are good with older children and they excel with lots of attention. They are very friendly and have a good attitude and are very high spirited. This is especially a unique quality for dogs of their size. The West Highland Terrier breed is very recognizable because of the media attention they have received for being in different product marketing campaigns.

West Highland Terriers have a medium sturdy body. The males and the bitches generally weigh about 15 to 22 pounds. The average height for both the males and the bitches ranges from 9 to 12 inches. They are usually carriers of a carrot shaped tail, that shouldn’t be docked as they are help up strait. The tails are longer and for both males and bitches can be between 5 to 6 inches long. West Highland Terriers also have muscular extremities that are compact. The jaw of the West Highland Terrier is very strong, and their teeth are very large for the size of the dog. The breeds ears are half stand up half floppy. The ears should be more in the stand up position for dog shows. The eyes of the Westie are small and bright. With the combination of the pointed ears and the deep set eyes the dogs appear very alert and ready for action.

The coat of the West Highland Terrier is soft and thick. The coat needs regular grooming because the rough outer coat needs to be 2 inches long. The coats are generally all white, and if there is any discoloration leaning towards the browns on their back or their feet the dogs are not ideal for dog shows. A popular choice to style the West Highland Terriers hair is to give the appearance of a lions mane around the head and face, but the rest of the coat is kept short. A neat little fact about Westies is that their feet are webbed, and is only noticed when the owner grooms the feet.

This breed is related to the working Terrier breeds. They are hunters of smaller rodent like animals such as rabbits and squirrels. This is an excellent job for the West Highland Terrier because they have a lot of energies and spunk. The dogs usually show a lot of aggression towards their prey when they are on the hunt. The West Highland Terrier has a very strong temperament and even though they are smaller dogs they have a big dog attitude.

West Highland Terriers have the tendency to think they guard dogs and will patrol their space religiously, even though they don’t have any real imposing attributes to scare away strangers. These dogs can be very possessive of their things, their owners, and their toys. If the West Highland Terrier is involved with any of the three previously mentioned items, and their tails are down and ears back be wary as they will potentially be provoked and can bite or growl to ward off people who annoy them.

The history of the Welsh Terrier is of a hunting dog. It would hunt fox, birds, and badgers. It was also kept as a companion dog. The origin of the Welsh Terrier is with Old English Terriers that were in existence in the 13th century and came into the breed we know today in the 1800’s. The original name was the Old English Terrier or it was also known as the Black and Tan Rough Haired Terrier until the 1900’s. It was officially recognized as a Welsh Terrier in 1886 and is one of the more common terriers.

The Welsh Terrier is a healthy breed of dog with no common illnesses affecting it. The breed is unique in the sense that it has two layers of fur. One layer that is an undercoat and another that insulates against the cold. The other layer of fur is a topcoat and it is coarse and protects the Welsh Terrier against the elements.

The average height of the Welsh Terrier both male and bitches is 15 inches. The average weight is 20 pounds for both the male and bitches. The colors of the coat are black and brown with red and black marts. White also occurs on the breast of the dogs. The dog’s temperament is happy and they get along with children and will follow children as they play. The dogs do have endless energy so it is not uncommon for the child to tire out before the dog and this is the time where adults need to intervene so as the dog doesn’t overstep its boundaries.

The Welsh Terrier is very obedient and loyal. The dogs require lots of exercise and need lots of attention to burn through their energy bank which rarely occurs. This dog is an excellent companion for someone who wants to have a jogging buddy or does lots of out doors activities. The Welsh Terrier can live in either the city or the country but has excellent temperament to live in the country.

The hunting desire is strong and living in the country would be perfect for these dogs as they need interesting things to do all day. It is a good idea for them to have wide open spaces as it is often difficult for the owner to keep them occupied all day. The personality of the Welsh Terrier is intelligent, lively and never intimidated by other people or animals.

The care of this breed is considerable considering the thickness of the coat. The nick name is also called the Stripping Breed and not because of their night job. It gained this name because it is necessary to strip the dogs hair as it is not possible to cut because it is curly and wiry. Stripping consists of plucking by hand the longer hairs. The Welsh Terrier need consistent grooming because of the thick coat. If you own a Welsh Terrier the breeder from whom you purchased can usually recommend a stripper who can groom your dog because if it is not done correctly it can indefinitely mar the appearance of your dog.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not a big dog, it has a short coat and is a breed of old times. It was bred for bear and bull fighting and wrangling. The dogs are similar to their cousins the American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier. The dogs because of their jobs were bred with the biggest and the strongest from each litter to create bigger and stronger dogs for better work performance.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a confident dog who loves people. It is very loyal to its family and is very accepting of strangers. Staffordshire Bull Terriers are very energetic and need lots of exercise to maintain its happy personality. The Staffie has another name the “keg on legs” nick name has to do with its stocky build. The Staffordshire Bull Terriers body is muscular and has a natural athletic ability with strong extremities. The muscles are very strong for its size, and this makes the Staffordshire a very courageous character. The color of the coat is black and tan; other colors can occur but is not common. The dog’s height on average for both males and bitches are 14 to 16 inches. Also the weight for both males and bitches on averages weigh 24 to 38 pounds.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a very intelligent and investigative dog, which is an excellent attribute paired with their fearlessness. This dog is also known as a “nanny dog” because of its tendency to be reliable. The dog because of its ancestry is also prone to fighting, and has a tremendous amount of aggression to other dogs. A dog even with a good attitude can fight if put in contact with another dog. This is a good reason it is necessary to control the breed in public places where other dogs may not have problems. Toys are excellent ways to distract a dog that may have potential problems with other dogs in the public setting.

The owners of these special dogs need to make sure that they are kept properly controlled and maintained in a safe environment to not encourage aggressive behavior. Staffordshire Bull Terriers should not be allowed to roam free and instead need secure housing to ensure against no possible problems with neighbors or their families. Even though a Staffie may be aggressive to other dogs it can be completely safe with people. Breeders have recognized that Staffies can have temperament issues, and are now working towards breeding dogs with mild tempers. In doing regular visits with other dogs the Staffie can become more comfortable with the idea and be more sociable with other animals. This is beneficial when there is more than one et in the home. Also this is beneficial for their behavior when in family settings with more than one animal and with children.

In the past in the 1800’s the Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed were used in bloodspots such as bull and bear baiting. The dogs were also used in dog fights because of their aggressive nature towards other animals. These dogs are very easy to train, and can go good or bad based on the owners intentions.

The Olde English Bulldogge is a recent introduction to an old breed that was in existence in England in the 1800’s. It is also referred to today as the Old English Bulldog because it is a reincarnation of an extinct breed of dog. These dogs are in relation to the other Bull breeds that exist today including the English Bulldog, American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Bulldog.

Olde English Bulldogs were bred to take part in the sport of bull baiting, hence the name BULL. Bull baiting was essentially stalking a bull and than getting the dogs to attack it. This was a sport of courage and agility and these were the necessary attributes to be successful in the so called sport.

The modern Olde English Bulldogge is a reincarnation of the “Regency Period Bull Baiter”. The Olde English Bulldogges were made by a man around the 1970’s. He used a charted course of breeding to recreate the Old Bulldog of times past. The breed was developed by crossing ½ English bulldog, 1/6th Bull Mastiff, 1/6th American Pit Bull Terrier, and 1/6th American Bulldog. These breeds were strategically planned and mixed to create the Olde English Bulldogge we know today.

In the early 1980s breeders became more interested in breeding this special newly revived type of dog. The dogs started popping up at shows around the country and slowly gained fame and notoriety. Through the work of the breeders the dogs slowly came into new glory. Also because of the success at the shows many more breeders took interest in the Olde English Bulldog.

This particular breed is an excellent guard dog. It has excellent health is extremely active and has the temperament of a dog who likes to work hard. The dog has the he mental prowess of the original breed of dog from the 1800’s and has many of the attributes of the original breed that it was modeled after. The only main difference from the original breed of dogs and today’s version is the tail; the tail is full pump handle tail. The goal of breeders today is to maintain and increase the health of the Olde English Bulldog and to ensure it longevity. These breeds are here to ensure that extinction does not come into play again for the Olde English Bulldog.

The appearance of the Olde English Bulldog is one of strength and intelligence. The body is strong and straight creating a look of muscle definition in the stance of the animal. The head of the dog is large and features wide set eyes, wrinkled forehead and a strong jaw. The eyes touch the outer bridge of the skull. The coat is usually thick and short with colors varying from red to white to brown and all the colors in between. Male’s heights range from 17 to 20 inches while bitches are between 15 to 19 inches. The general weight of the male is 60-80 pounds while the general weight of the bitches are between 45 to 70 pounds.
